Multisensory processing of emotional cues predicts intrusive memories after virtual reality trauma

چکیده
Abstract Research has shown that high trait anxiety can alter multisensory processing of threat cues (by amplifying integration angry faces and voices); however, it remains unknown whether differences in play a role the psychological response to trauma. This study examined relationship between emotion intrusive memories over seven days following exposure an analogue trauma sample 55 healthy young adults. We used adapted version film paradigm, where scenes showing car accident were presented using virtual reality, rather than conventional 2D film. Multisensory was assessed prior simulation forced choice recognition paradigm with happy, sad voice-only, face-only, audiovisual congruent (face voice expressed matching emotions) incongruent expressions different emotions). found increased accuracy recognising anger (but not happiness sadness) condition relative voice- face-only conditions associated more intrusions VR Despite previous results linking intrusion development, no significant influence on frequency observed. Enhanced threat-related information (i.e. voices) could lead overly threatening appraisals stressful life events result greater development after

Effects of Sleep after Experimental Trauma on Intrusive Emotional Memories.
STUDY OBJECTIVES To investigate sleep's effect in the immediate aftermath of experiencing an analog trauma in the laboratory on reducing intrusive emotional memory formation. METHODS Sixty-five healthy women were exposed to an experimental laboratory trauma. They viewed a neutral and a trauma film in the laboratory and were randomly allocated to either a group that slept following film viewin...
متن کاملMemory control ability modulates intrusive memories after analogue trauma.
BACKGROUND Most people suffer from intrusive memories in the aftermath of trauma. For survivors' well-being, it is key that these intrusions are controlled. Memory control can be exerted through retrieval suppression. Poor retrieval suppression, however, should be associated with persistent distressing intrusions and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study tested the hypothesis that in...
متن کاملDegrading emotional memories induced by a virtual reality paradigm.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES In Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, a dual-task approach is used: patients make horizontal eye movements while they recall aversive memories. Studies showed that this reduces memory vividness and/or emotionality. A strong explanation is provided by working memory theory, which suggests that other taxing dual-tasks are also effective. Ex...
متن کاملInducing and modulating intrusive emotional memories: a review of the trauma film paradigm.
Highly affect-laden memory intrusions are a feature of several psychological disorders with intrusive images of trauma especially associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The trauma film paradigm provides a prospective experimental tool for investigating analogue peri-traumatic cognitive mechanisms underlying intrusion development. We review several historical papers and some more...
متن کاملPerceptual processing during trauma, priming and the development of intrusive memories
BACKGROUND Intrusive reexperiencing in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly triggered by stimuli with perceptual similarity to those present during the trauma. Information processing theories suggest that perceptual processing during the trauma and enhanced perceptual priming contribute to the easy triggering of intrusive memories by these cues. METHODS Healthy volunteers (N = 51)...
